U.S. Marines held the landing drills in Latvia, using their landing vehicles. These maneuvers are part of the large-scale exercise called BALTOPS. The multinational forces involved in the exercise imitate military actions at sea, in land and in the air.

This year, the exercise involves 14 NATO countries and their partners.  The Baltic States urged the U.S. and their allies to increase security measures due to Russia’s intentions to hold the large-scale drills in September this year – jointly with Belarus. The regular drills, referred to as the West, are supposed to be held in Kaliningrad oblast, Russia; by NATO’s estimates, up to 100,000 Russian servicemen will participate in the exercise.
