Ukraine's Mykola Karpyuk celebrated his birthday in custody in Russia, sixth time in a row. In 2014, Karpyuk was detained at the Russian border. In May 2016, the Supreme Court of Chechnya sentenced Karpyuk and his compatriot Stanislav Klykh to 22.5 and 20 years behind the bars, respectively.

Both Ukrainians are charged with murders of Russian military men during the First Chechen War in 1994-1995. However, the prosecution did not provide any solid proof of Klykh and Karpyuk staying in Chechnya at the time.
