Ukrainian civil activist dies at hospital months after acid attack

Ukrainian anti-corruption activist Kateryna Handziuk died at a hospital on November 4, several months after surviving the acid attack. In June, the attacker poured sulfuric acid on her head, which resulted in heavy burns.

Handziuk served as the counselor to the mayor of Kherson, southern Ukraine; she was an active fighter with corrupt practices on the local and the national level alike. As of Monday noon, the official cause of death is not confirmed yet. Handziuk’s death increased pressure on Ukrainian officials, accused of doing too little to stop the violence against the country’s embattled civil society.

The investigation team currently suspects five former servicemen of the Ukrainian military who served in Donbas conflict. All but one pleaded guilty.
