On November 21, Ukrainians mark the Day of Dignity and Freedom. On this very day in 2013, a rally began in Kyiv, as people protested against the government's decision to suspend the signature of EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. The protesters demanded resignation of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov. When the police rudely dispersed that peaceful demonstration, even more people reached Kyiv's Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square, protesting against such brutality.

More than 20 countries all over the world supported Ukraine with solidarity actions. In January and February 2014, the events in Kyiv eventually led to an open conflict with law enforcers. According to official data, at least 108 people deceased in street fights; most of them suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
