Ukraine demands to transfer political prisoner Bekirov to hospital

Ukrainian ombudsman Lyudmyla Denisova turned to the international community, asking not to extend the detention term for Crimean Tatar Edem Bekirov. On Thursday, the so-called 'court' of the annexed Crimea is to solve whether the man would remain in custody.

Denisova reiterated that Bekirov is severely ill, as he suffers from sugar diabetes and other serious diseases. If he continues to stay in detention, this could affect his health even more. The Ukrainian official urged the occupant authority of Crimea to transfer the man to a hospital immediately.

Edem Bekirov was detained in December 2018, as he was entering the annexed peninsula. They charged him with carrying explosives. Bekirov says the whole case against him is trumped up.
