Russia’s Supreme Court refuses to pardon Ukrainian political prisoner Roman Sushchenko

On September 12, Russian Supreme Court overruled the appeal against the verdict for Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko. The judgment of the Appeals Board says that the verdict of Moscow City Court as of June 4, must remain without changes. Therefore, the verdict came into force, with Sushchenko sentenced to 12 years behind the bars.

The reporter of Ukrinform news agency was detained in Moscow in September 2016 in Moscow and accused of espionage. Ukraine appealed to Russia with a demand to release the Ukrainian journalist multiple times.  Sushchenko denies any guilt; his lawyers, human rights watchers and the Ukrainian government call the case politically motivated.
