Russian naval group attacked the Ukrainian Navy vessels in the Sea of Azov on November 25. The incident took place as two Ukraine's small gunboats and a tugboat were heading from Mariupol to Odesa, crossing Kerch Strait.

The Border Guard of Russian FSB demanded that the Ukrainian ships halt since they ‘illegally entered’ the Russian waters in the area of Kerch Strait. The Ukrainian vessels continued to move on, obeying the order of the naval command and living up to the international maritime law. The Russian gunboats and gunships escorted them and then opened fire. The attack rendered all three vessels immobile, and six Ukrainian sailors were wounded; two of them are now in grave condition.

The Ukrainian side and a number of foreign authorities unanimously condemned Russia's actions in this case. Kyiv turned for international assistance on this issue. Meanwhile, three of the six injured Ukrainian sailors are at a hospital in Kerch in the annexed Crimea. Russian ombudswoman Tatyana Moskalkova stated their condition was 'fine'.
