Russia's largest military training exercises since the Cold War are taking place in the country's Far East. According to the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces, the exercises involved about 300,000 servicemen, a thousand airplanes, helicopters and drones; 36,000 armored vehicles and 80 ships. Mongolian and Chinese units joined in, too.

The drills area covers Ural Mountains, Siberia and the Far East, with the active drills scheduled up to September 17. Japan already expressed concerns over Russia’s increased military presence near its borders. Japan and Russia have a territorial dispute over Kuril Islands.
