Presidential election in Ukraine: Zelensky avoids debates with Poroshenko

18:51, 15 April 2019

Presidential candidate Volodymyr Zelensky once again claimed he would appear on the debates on April 19. He said that in his video message that he sent President Petro Poroshenko and made this message public via social networks.

Earlier, Zelensky did not join the debates that took place at NSC Olimpiysky stadium on April 14. The current president, on the other hand, came to the session hall, which was packed with journalists, as 20,000 people watched the debates live outside the stadium.

Previously, Zelensky agreed for debates on a condition that they take place at Olimpiysky stadium on April 19. Poroshenko agreed, but offered to hold the debates on April 14.  The head of the state said he would also come to Suspilne TV channel, where the debates should take place on April 19; this is foreseen by the Ukrainian law, and it obliges both candidates. Zelensky's team, instead, stressed that on Friday, their candidate plans to come to Olimpiysky stadium, not to Suspilne TV studio.
