Parliament upholds the law on Ukrainian language functioning

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Parliament supported the law on functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language. 278 MPs voted for the bill, which has been discussed and amended during the last two months.

The document includes 2,500 amendments. It foresees that the President, Parliamentary Speaker, ministers, officials of all levels, teachers, judges and doctors are obliged to know Ukrainian perfectly well.

The law enforcerment agencies and courts are bound to use Ukrainian, too. The document also concerns the law enforcement agencies. Those breaking the law will face fines up to USD 377.
