New structure shields destroyed reactor 4 in Chernobyl

The arch shielding radioactive waste caused by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power station accident has started sliding into place. This was reported by Minister of ecology and natural resources of Ukraine Ostap Semerak.

165 meters long and 11 meters high, the construction is the biggest ground movable design in the world.

The weight is more than 36 thousand tons.

The NSC was built in a spotless territory close reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and will be slid more than 327 meters to close the unit. The arch has slid 6 meters for now.

The process shall take several days

It will make the site safe and take into account the inevitable disassembling of the maturing cover at present lodging the reactor and the administration of the radioactive waste inside the structure
