Ruslan Khomchak has been introduced as the new Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces. The graduate of Moscow General Military College, the officer worked at the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

In 2014, he was appointed a high-rank commander in Donetsk region; he was the one who conducted the withdrawal from the encircled Ilovaisk in August that year. Khomchak and some of his men managed to leave the Russia-controlled area, but a lot of fighters were killed in the obnoxious attack launched by Russian mercenaries and regular army troops.

The official data report says 336 Ukrainian soldiers deceased, over 400 more were wounded, another 300 captured. This was the highest death toll in the Ukrainian military since the beginning of Donbas conflict.
