Kyiv asks UN to put pressure on Russia to release Ukrainian sailors

19:55, 18 January 2019

Ukraine's mission in the UN insists that Russia remains under pressure in the view of the illegal detention of Ukrainian sailors. This is mentioned in the letter of Volodymyr Yelchenko, the Ukrainian ambassador in the UN.

His press office quoted him on Twitter. 'Ukraine demands that the Russian Federation respect the rights of 24 Ukrainian servicemen captured in the Black Sea on November 25, 2018, given their POW status in line with the international humanitarian law', reads the message.

The Ukrainian diplomat passed the UN Secretary-General a copy of the Foreign Ministry's statement, in which the authority urged the international community to consolidate pressure on Russia so as to release the captives.
