IOC considers banning Russian anthem and flag at Winter Olympics 2018

17:47, 7 November 2017

The Russian anthem and state flag may be banned at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. These could be the sanctions for doping abuse, imposed by the IOC, International Olympic Committee. The New York Times wrote this referring to the sources close to the IOC.

There’s a small chance that Russia will be excluded from the Olympics but the sports authority considers an option to make the Russian team perform under a neutral flag. The Russian parliament already denied such opportunity, calling it unacceptable. Another option is to expel the athletes and officials involved in the 2014 doping scandal or to fine the national team.

The Committee will announce the decision on December 5. The sanctions are due to the scandal, which broke out after the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014. The World Anti-Doping Agency found out that Russian government was involved in faking doping probes and supplying the athletes with performance-enhancing substances.
