Hungary demands that Ukraine submit amendments to controversial education law

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said he would block the participation of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the NATO summit scheduled for July 2018. He said this during a visit to Brussels.

Szijarto demanded that Ukraine submit amendments to the education law, which evoked controversies and, eventually, the outrage of the Hungarian government. According to the Hungarian Foreign Minister, the document badly limits the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government denies these charges, saying that the law offers enough opportunities for children from various national minorities to be educated in their native language.
