Five years since beginning of conflict in eastern Ukraine

18:53, 15 April 2019

It's been five years since the first shots were fired in Donbas conflict. On April 15, 2014, Ukrainian special service fighters released Kramatorsk airfield, previously captured by pro-Russian occupants.

That object in Donetsk region was of specific strategic importance, as it could host transport aircraft. The airfield also was a defensive point for shutting down the approaches to nearby towns of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. The enemy used artillery and missile launchers to shell Ukrainian positions, but the government forces held out.

The occupants tried to storm the Ukrainian emplacements multiple times, but the attempts failed. In summer 2014, Ukrainian forces liberated both Kramatorsk and Slovyansk.
