It’s official: the deaths of five law enforcers in Knyazhychi village, Kyiv region, are qualified as murder. The prosecutor’s office in Kyiv region reported this on Monday.

The pre-trial investigation is underway. President Petro Poroshenko held the staff meeting with leaders of law enforcement agencies and ordered to hold the investigation in an objective and timely fashion. The leader of the state expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, saying that from now on, the case is under his direct control.

The shooting incident in Knyazhychi village took place late at night on December 4. The law enforcers – policemen and the State Protection Service agents – attempted to detain a group of burglars. A shoot-out occurred due to the confusion between the law enforcers, who arrived at the site and took police officers for the criminals. Police task force KORD reached the site and opened fire, presumably not knowing who they shot at. Two policemen, two State Protection Service agents and another fighter of police task force were killed. Interior Minister Arsen Avakov confirmed he’d abrupt his visit to Canada due to the tragedy and return to Ukraine.
