European Parliament approves suspension mechanism for Ukraine and Georgia

19:52, 8 December 2016

The European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs approved the visa-free regime suspension mechanism for Ukraine and Georgia.

37 members of the committee voted for, nine were against, two abstained. Now the decision needs to be approved during the European Parliament session. This is scheduled for the January 18. Then in the European Council. Thus the visa-free regime is expected to enter it’s force in February.

The suspension mechanism is the last obstacle in visa liberalization for Ukraine. Previously European authorities rounded off the internal negotiations on suspension mechanism and reached an agreement in the issue. As we reported earlier, the non-visa travel requires a biometric international passport for the citizens of Ukraine.
