The ECHR will find out if Russia actually controlled the territory of Ukrainian Crimea yet before the annexation of the peninsula in 2014. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government charges the Kremlin with tortures, murders and the illegal kidnapping of people in the occupied Crimea.

The Court received a respective appeal from the Ukrainian side. Hanna Yudkivska, the ECHR judge from Ukraine said this in an interview with the Ukrainian media. According to the Ukrainian government’s appeal, it was in February and March 2014 when the Russian special services affected the political decision-making process in Crimea. The first session of the ECHR in this particular case is scheduled for February 2019. The decision might be made a year after that, Yudkivska said.
