Coal mine in Donetsk region cut off from electricity due to shelling

18:27, 31 January 2017

Zasyadko coal mine is cut off from the electricity in the occupied Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, leaving 203 miners trapped under the ground. As of evening January 31, 191 of them are evacuated.

The rescue teams are working hard to evacuate the rest of the miners.

This particular coal mine has suffered several major methane blasts over the last decade – for instance, the explosion in March 2015, which killed 34 people. Back then, leaders of the so-called DPR refused from Ukraine’s assistance, which delayed and complicated the search and rescue operation.
