Anniversary of the battle of Ilovaisk: Ukraine commemorates the fallen warriors

17:19, 29 August 2018

On August 29, Ukrainians bow their heads to those who fell in the bloody battle of Ilovaisk in 2014. Some of the fiercest fights in the ongoing conflict in Donbas took place near that strategically important city in Donetsk region.

The battle cost hundreds of lives of Ukrainian soldiers – at least 366, according to the official data. Hundreds more were wounded, captured and went missing in action.

On Wednesday, Kyiv hosted rallies where common citizens gathered to pay tribute to the fallen warriors. Moments of silence, flower-laying ceremonies and prayers for the deceased were observed in the downtown city and near the building of the Russian embassy in Kyiv.

Thousands of people – relatives, friends and brothers in arms of the perished servicemen – joined the solemn events.
