Annexation: this day 5 years ago Russia began armed aggression against Ukraine in Crimea

12:43, 27 February 2019

This day 5 years ago Russia began the armed aggression against Ukraine in Crimea. Over 100 militants in military unmarked uniform seized the building of parliament and the government of the autonomous republic of Crimea, they blocked the exits and raised the Russian flags.

On that very day half of the Crimean MPs announced a referendum on the accession of the peninsula to the Russian Federation to be held on May 25. Only one year later Vladimir Putin admitted he sent troops to Crimea.

Aggression in the peninsula was launched on February 20, 2014. On this day the first violations of the integrity of Ukrainian border by Russian militants in Kerch Strait were recorded.
