23 Ukrainian sailors held in detention in Crimea and Russia

Oleg Melnychuk, the 23-year old commander of Yeni Kapi tugboat of the Ukrainian Navy is one of the 23 Ukrainian sailors detained by Russian special service agents in the Azov Sea. Melnychuk stays at Bilohirsk detention centre, not far from Simferopol in the occupied Crimea. His lawyer Edem Smedlyayev already made his way there.

According to Smedlyayev, the prevention measure will be chosen on Wednesday. Previously, Ukrainian ombudswoman Lyudmyla Denisova reported that all detained sailors are charged with ‘crossing the naval space of the Russian Federation’.

Russian FSB, the federal security service interrogated the detainees and made them testify on the camera. Ukrainian Navy Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Ihor Voronchenko claimed that the Ukrainians testified under pressure.
