Within the nearest twenty years, a global earthquake might stir up Zakarpattia region as this area is in a seismic zone, as Oleksandr Kedzera, Deputy Director of Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, said, Obozrevatel reports.
“Certainly, there are reasons to be worried, as if we look at the seismic map of Ukraine, there might be some global earthquakes in Zakarpattia. They have happened. Local effects reached eight points,” the scientist said.
Zakarpattia belongs to the active seismic zone of our planet, that is why the earthquakes are possible. Yet, nobody can say whether they will take place and if yes, how strong it will be.
“Forecasts are wrong even for one hour, one day or one month. The more years, the less the responsibility is, as it remains unknown whether it will take place. Nobody can forecast the time, power and location of strong earthquakes today. Yet, there were reports on earthquakes in Zakarpattia, and it might happen in the future, which is true,” he thinks.
Kendzera recommends observing the building standards in active seismic zones in Ukraine so that the earthquake would not cause serious damage.
“Knowing the way the ground quakes during an earthquake, one can build cheap and earthquake resistant houses,” the scientist added.
It should be noted that on October 28, the residents of Odesa region reported that they felt an earthquake. Later, it was defined that its epicenter was located in the Vrancea zone on the territory of Romania with 5,7 points quakes, and in Ukraine – 2-3 points.
