Volodymyr Yelchenko, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations, sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General in connection with the situation in Avdiivka.
"We demand that Russia stops hostilities in eastern Ukraine and respect the ceasefire regime," the statement says.
The document also states that for the last two days Russian occupation forces carried out a massive attack along the contact line, using Grad, 120 and 152-mm artillery and tanks.
As a result of the attacks, over 400 thousand people might be left without water and electricity, according to the text.
Earlier it was reported that a state of emergency was declared in Avdiivka. The authorities established Coordination Centre, which includes the heads of the city, security forces, rescue workers and representatives of city enterprises.
