Ex-President of Ukraine has to be involved in the settlement of Donbas conflict, as Corey Lewandowski, the Head of the political headquarters of the U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence said in an interview for an Israeli TV channel ILand, Ukrainian News reported.
In his statement, Lewandowski referred to the conversation with Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem about Ukraine during his recent visit to Israel.
“We talked about a need to bring new people even the ex-President (Yanukovych, - ed.), as he is from this region. The Patriarch supported it. We also officially support this position and in the press, when we see the escalation of the tensions… Yes, we have discussed this issue with the Patriarch. We have agreed that the conflicts should be settled. I have to say that the President of Russia pays heed to the Patriarch and treats him very well. So the Patriarch might play a very important role in this case. In the settlement of the conflict (war conflict in Donbas, - ed.). And not only in the religious sector, but also in politics, business and so on”.
Besides, Lewandowski mentioned the judicial process against Yanukovych is still underway. “As Ukraine is our friend, it is important for us that all the processes which go on there are fair, and that human rights are not violated. Official letters have being sent to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. No reaction followed. Informal contacts were implemented through the U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo during the meetings in Washington and through our media. I repeat, we consider Ukraine our friend, and it is important for us that the spirit and the letter of the law are observed in all the cases. We are worried about that”, he said.
