Yanukovych had surgery, he is on rehab, - lawyer

The defence of Ukraine's ex-President complained that it could not inform the accused about the court session

Ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, accused of state treason, had surgery. He is now on rehabilitation, as his lawyer Oleksandr Horoshynsky, told the journalists before the court hearing in Kyiv, 112 Ukraine broadcasted it.

According to the lawyer, Yanukovych was not informed about today’s hearing.

“I can only say that Viktor Yanukovych had surgery. He is now on rehabilitation. This is all the information I have. I do not have a direct connection with Yanukovych. Therefore, we could not inform about consideration of this proceeding. The court appointed session a day before, so that the parties could not get things going so that our client could not have an opportunity to participate in the hearing,” Horoshynsky said.

Kyiv Obolonsky Court began announcing of the sentence for the fugitive president at 9 am on January 24.

Viktor Yanukovych is accused of state treason, activities which lead to violation of Ukraine’s state border, supporting aggressive war against Ukraine.

The Main Military Prosecutor’s Office passed the indictment on Yanukovych’s state treason case to the court in March 2017. The accused himself did not participate in the hearings, he is not in Ukraine hiding in Russia.

The prosecution asks to sentence ex-President for 15 years behind bars.
