On the evening of February 22, the folk-band Go_A was chosen to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam. The band was the dark horse of the National Selection because before it started, few knew about these musicians. We will tell you what we known about Go_A and what they will take to the Netherlands in spring.
Go_A band was formed in Kyiv in 2011. It is noteworthy that another popular Ukrainian folk-band Onuka appeared only two years later. And the participants of last year's National Selection Yuko appeared in 2017. Despite the fact that Go_A was one of the founders of this trend in Ukraine, until this year they remained unknown to the wide public and for many became a discovery.
The group is considered to be from Kyiv, but its members include musicians from different places of Ukraine. The frontwoman Kateryna Pavlenko is from Nizhin, the founder of the band and the main multi-instrumentalist Taras Shevchenko is a Kyiv resident, sopilka player Ihor Didenchuk is a native of Lutsk, and guitarist Ivan Hryhoryak is from Bukovyna. The composition of the band changed 14 times over 8 years.
The name of the collective symbolizes a return to the roots and combines the English word “go” and the Greek letter alpha, which stands for the prime cause of the whole world.
The team has so far only one solo album. Record #Idy na zvuk was released in November 2016. It included 10 songs.
The band managed to collaborate with another participant in the National Selection 2020 - singer Katya Chilly. The musicians recorded the Christmas single “Generous Evening” together.
Although the band was rarely was called on television before and was hardly shown in mass music programs, G_A have been taking part at Ukrainian and foreign festivals many times. They performed on the stages of Jazz Koktebel, Gogolfest, Kraina Mriy (The Land of Dreams), White Nights Festivals and represented Ukrainian music in Israel, Poland and Belarus.
The song “Vesnyanka” brought the first tangible popularity to the group. The track won The Best Track in Ukraine contest, and also got into the rotation of the dance radio station KissFM and spent 4 months in 10Dance charts, 6 weeks of which it had 1st place.
Go_A members describe their musical style as a combination of Ukrainian authentic vocals, modern dance beats, African drums and a powerful guitar drive.
In Rotterdam, Go_A will represent Ukraine on May 12 - in the first semifinal of the big Eurovision Song Contest. The draw put them in the second half of the show. Their rivals will be contestants from Northern Macedonia, Belarus, Lithuania, Sweden, Slovenia, Australia, Ireland, Russia, Norway, Cyprus, Croatia, Azerbaijan, Malta, Israel, Romania and Belgium.
If nothing changes, the band will represent the country with a song in Ukrainian language. We will find out how this will affect the absolute result of Ukraine - 15 qualifiers to the finals in all 15 contests with the participation of our country. So far, only two states can boast about such an achievement: Ukraine and Australia.
