The European Union Council today adopted a resolution on the introduction of visa-free regime between Ukraine and the EU. This was stated by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
"The Council of Ministers of the European Union has just made a final decision to grant us, the citizens of Ukraine the right to travel to EU without visas. On May 17, in Strasbourg, in the European Parliament building , as we agreed with our European friends, the relevant legislative act will be solemnly signed. Perhaps, it would be the most important of my visits for three years of service as head of the Ukrainian state, "he said.
According to him, after the decision is published in the Official Journal of the EU, it will come into force.
"Approximately on June 11, 34 European countries will turn on green light to owners of Ukrainian biometric passports for visa-free short-term trips," he added.
The President noted that "visa-free travel is much more than a simplified way of traveling abroad, it is a giant step to Europe, to the establishment of human freedom and the independence of our state."
According to the EU Council press service, the Minister of Internal Affairs and National Security of Malta, Carmelo Abela, said that the adoption of the decision on visa-free regime liberalization is an important step for Ukrainian citizens that will strengthen the ties between Ukraine and the EU.
At the same time, he noted that the suspension mechanism for visa-free travel, recently adopted by the EU, allows the Union to suspend it if serious problems with migration or security issues arise in Ukraine.
