Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy met with the new U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell, at which he asked the interlocutor to provide Ukraine with lethal weapons. The head of parliament wrote this on his Facebook page.
"I called on the U.S. State Department to consider the possibility and provide Ukraine with lethal defensive weapons," Parubiy wrote.
Also, according to him, during the meeting they State discussed the progress of reforms in Ukraine and trade and economic cooperation with the United States.
The visit of the Assistant Secretary of State is a sign of great support for Ukraine from the United States, speaker of the Ukrainian parliament believes.
As it was reported earlier Wess Mitchell, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State came to Ukraine with the official visit late on Tuesday. The U.S. Embassy reported this on Twitter.
‘We welcome U.S. Assistant Secretary A. Wess Mitchell in Ukraine. It is another manifestation of the United States firm support of Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and reforms. The visit also aims to urge the Ukrainian government to continue with critically important reforms,’ says the message.
