Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has sent to the draft law granting citizens the right for a legislative initiative to the Constitutional Court. The session of the parliament was broadcasted on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.
The draft law proposes to reconsider Article 93 of the Constitution, which states that the right of the legislative initiative in the Verkhovna Rada is provided only to the president, the Cabinet of Ministers, and MPs. It is offered to add people on the list.
During the consideration of the bill, some MPs criticized it due to the absence of the procedure of the realization of such right.
“In any society, just like in Ukraine, there is an active civil part of our people and it is proved by several revolutions that have already taken place. If politically active citizens propose some interesting initiative, and this issue gathers enough votes from other citizens, then it will be considered by the parliament,” Fedor Venislavsky, the representative of Ukraine‘s President in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine said.
As it was reported, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky offered to provide people with the right of the legislative initiative and enshrine the proper regulation in the Constitution.
Earlier, Zelensky offered the Verkhovna Rada to reduce the number of lawmakers from 450 to 300 MPs.
