“Dear colleagues, today we recollect with grief our defenders, who died fighting for independence, sovereignty, and integrity of Ukraine. Thanks to their act of bravery, we are safe here now and we have the opportunity to calmly work on laws. Five years ago, regular units of the army of the Russian aggressor insidiously attacked Ukrainian soldiers near Ilovaisk,” Speaker of Parliament Andriy Parubiy said.
He stressed that this military offense was proved and the punishment will be inevitable.
“Ukraine remembers tragic and at the same time heroic pages of its history. Berestecko, Kruty, Ilovaisk, airpost, Debaltseve…Our independence was born in resilient and uncompromising struggle. Let us be worthy of the fallen knights of Ukraine. Eternal memory and glory to our heroes! I announce a minute of silence,” Parubiy said.
Earlier it was reported that 220 servicemen of Ukraine's Armed Forces were killed in the Battle of Ilovaisk that took place in Donbas in August 2014. Another 44 were wounded, and 40 more went missing in action; 13 fighters are still in captivity of Russian mercenaries.
British investigation group has released new pieces of evidence of the Russian army fighting in the 2014 Battle of Ilovaisk. The Guardian came up with a report about T-72B3 tanks, which at that specific time were used only by the Russian military. These were employed in the Battle of Ilovaisk; they were spotted near the town in Donetsk region in August and September 2014.
Ilovaisk battle, one of the most tragic pages in Ukraine's military history took place in August 2014. Back then, Ukrainian forces approached the city and were about to storm it so as to get rid of the units of pro-Russian separatists there. The city was almost liberated when regular Russian army units encircled a large group of Ukrainian troops there. The encircled Ukrainian units were offered to withdraw across the green corridor, as Russian troops guaranteed their safety. When the withdrawal process began, the enemy started shooting. Over 300 Ukrainian servicemen lost their lives in the obnoxious attacks; many more were wounded.
