Verkhovna Rada asks to grant Ukraine major non-NATO ally status

The Parliament also asked the USA to consider concluding the defense agreement with Ukraine

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine asked America to consider concluding the defense agreement with Ukraine and granting it the status of the major non-NATO ally. 232 MPs voted for this decision.

The draft was proposed by the leader of the Radical Party Oleh Lyashko, leader of Narodny Front Party Maksym Burbak, the head of the foreign affairs committee Hanna Hopko and the leader of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc fraction Ihor Hryniv and others.

“According to Budapest Memorandum and considering the development of strategic partnership between our countries, we appeal to the USA to consider concluding the defense agreement with Ukraine and granting it the status of the major non-NATO ally.  Granting Ukraine the status of the major non-NATO ally and concluding bilateral defense agreement will have a great influence on stopping Russian aggression against Ukraine, stopping aggressor and preventing incitement of war in Europe. This is in Ukraine, America and Europe’s best interests,” the statement says.

The head of the Verkhovna Rada will direct the text of the appeal to the Congress of the United States of America.

The resolution will take effect from the moment of its adoption.

Earlier it was reported that US Congress proposed to give Ukraine $150 mln for defense. According to the text of the document, it is planned to transfer funds before September 30, 2017.
