The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine added December 25 to the list of the holidays due to Christmas by the Gregorian calendar and only May 1 remains to be the International Worker’s Day. 238 MPs supported this draft law as 112 Ukraine broadcasted.
The draft law determines December 25 as the holiday and non-working day while May 2 will be a working day.
The authors of the law claim that 11 000 religious Catholic and Protestant communities that equal 30% of all acting religious communities in Ukraine celebrate Christmas by the Gregorian calendar in other words on December 25.
Andry Paruby, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada and Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine should sign the law. Later the document will be published in the official edition ‘Holos Ukrayiny’ and it will come into force the next day after the publishment.
Earlier it was reported that Ukrainian Institute of National Memory offered to change the calendar of the Ukrainian holidays. Particularly, it is planned to switch the non-working day from May 8 to May 9 and reshape the International Women’s Day to the Day of Fight for Woman’s Right and make it a working day.
