The delegation of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) has arrived in Ukraine to learn the new language law. The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ukraine stated that.
The result of the visit of the Venice Commission's experts has to be the preparation of the conclusion on implementation of the law about the Functioning of the Ukrainian language as the official language, which has to be adopted by the Commission on the 125th session in December 2019.
"Ukraine fully guarantees the protection of rights on the national minorities and comes from the belief that the state language law is aimed at encouraging to extend the role of the national minorities in the Ukrainian society," the message says.
As it was reported earlier, the law about Ukrainian as the only official language in Ukraine took effect on July 16. From that time, government officials of all levels MPs, judges, lawyers, teachers, and medics were obliged to speak Ukrainian fluently.
Ukrainian is also the only official language to be used in secondary schools and universities. In kindergartens and primary schools, there will be groups for those using the languages of national minorities.
