The United States will support defense reform in Ukraine until it meets the criteria for NATO membership. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated this during a press briefing.

"After the NATO summit in June 2014, NATO allies confirmed their support of Ukraine in its intention to become a full member of NATO. We remain steadfast in supporting Ukraine's defense reform, which will help meet the criteria for full NATO membership," Austin said.

He said he had held fruitful talks with Ukraine's Defense Minister Andriy Taran on a framework agreement signed in Washington in August 2021.

"This agreement provides us with a strategic framework for a defense partnership, and we intend to strengthen our strategic partnership," he said.

Austin noted that the United States must help Ukraine, and U.S. President Joe Biden has repeatedly underlined this.

"President Biden has repeatedly emphasized this - our commitment to support Ukraine, its territorial integrity and inviolability - and we take it seriously. I am here to assure you of our serious intentions," he added.

On Tuesday, October 19, the working visit of the delegation of the United States Department of Defense headed by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin began.

Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andriy Taran and Lloyd Austin discussed the implementation of a framework agreement on the strategic foundations of the defense partnership and security in the Black Sea.
