The United States is ready to apply sanctions if Nord Stream 2 poses a threat to Ukraine's energy independence after its launch. The head of the Ukrainian state stated this during a briefing following talks with his American counterpart Joe Biden.
"I received a generalized support; it is set out in a joint statement and corresponds to what we talked about at our meeting ... So far, we are at the stage when President Biden personally guarantees that if from the Russian Federation or from other parties of Nord Stream 2 in case of its launch, something would be violated, which implies a dangerous situation for Ukraine due to energy problems, the United States guarantees the imposition of sanctions. For Ukraine, this is a great victory. But this issue was very difficult and shaky," said Zelensky, answering journalists' questions about whether the American side has provided assurances of staunch guarantees to protect Ukraine's interests in connection with the launch of the project.
According to the president, Nord Stream 2 issue still needs to be discussed with the Ukrainian caucus in Congress (Ukraine's support group - ed.)
During his working visit to Washington on August 31, President Volodymyr Zelensky met with the US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. During the meeting, president raised the issue of maintaining gas transit through Ukraine after the launch of Nord Stream 2.
On September 1, a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took place in Washington. The meeting began at 21:00 (Kyiv time) in the Oval Office of the White House. The talks between the leaders of the two countries lasted a little over two hours.
Earlier, Gazprom reported that the first string of Nord Stream 2 was almost ready for launch. At the same time, the completion of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline construction in German waters by the pipe-laying vessel Fortuna is scheduled for September 12.
