US promises to help Ukraine raise NATO partner status

The United States expressed support for Ukraine's aspirations to become a NATO member and promised to contribute to raising the country's status as a partner of the North Atlantic Alliance as the US State Department stated in the new U.S.-Ukraine Charter on Strategic Partnership.

“Guided by the April 3, 2008 Bucharest Summit Declaration of the NATO North Atlantic Council and as reaffirmed in the June 14, 2021 Brussels Summit Communique of the NATO North Atlantic Council, the United States supports Ukraine’s right to decide its own future foreign policy course free from outside interference, including with respect to Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO,” the document states.

Moreover, Washington assured Ukraine to continue its assistance in defense and security reform, as well as military training and drills.

“The United States supports Ukraine’s efforts to maximize its status as a NATO Enhanced Opportunities Partner to promote interoperability,” the American side underlines.

On November 10, Washington hosted a meeting of the Ukraine-US Strategic Partnership Commission. The agenda of the commission meeting, in particular, discussed issues of Ukraine's defense, strengthening energy security, attracting American investments to Ukraine, and jointly combating cyber threats and climate change.

The same day, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken signed the Ukraine-US Strategic Partnership Charter.
