‘On Thursday, March 15, UN will hold the session on the situation in occupied Crimea in Arria-formula at the initiative of Ukraine’, the message said.
The beginning of the meeting is planned for 21:00 Kyiv time.
Oleh Nikolenko, the Speaker of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to UN claimed that the preparation of the election of the Russian president at the occupied peninsula by Russian authorities and the possible ways for the de-occupation of the Ukrainian territories will be also discussed during the meeting as Ukrinform reported.
‘Olena Zerkal, the Deputy Foreign Minister will represent Ukraine at the session. Also, the representatives of the Crimean Tatars Mejlis will take part in the discussion besides the members of the UN Security Council. Also, the appeal of Robert Serry, the former UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Ukraine is expected’, the Ukrainian diplomat noted.
He noted that the holding of the session was initiated by the delegation of Ukraine to UN. It was supported by the current members of the Security Council, particularly, Sweden, the UK, Poland, the Netherlands and the US.
‘It will be important to discuss the situation in Crimea before the illegal election of the president of Russia planned there. The position of the Ukrainian side in this issue is principal – the organization of the so-called people’s will expression in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol by the occupation authorities is the gross violation of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, cynical and demonstrative disregard of the world-recognized norms of the international law by Russia’, Nikolenko emphasized.
The UN Security Council meetings in Arria-formula are held to allow the members of the Council to get the information from the wide range of the members who are usually cannot be heard in the Security Council. Such discussions can be held in the close and open formats and allow holding the direct dialogue with the representatives of the governments, international organizations and non-governmental actors on the issues that are in the competence of the UN Security Council.
This format was called in the honor of Diego Arria, the Ambassador of Venezuela who began to use this practice in 1992 as the representative of Venezuela in the Security Council.
