Ukrainian scientists are the first in the world to prove that the level of the cell-free DNA might predict the progress of the coronavirus disease. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine reported citing Director of General and Molecular Pathophysiology Department Viktor Dosenko.
According to Dosenko, any doctor in the world can predict the progress of the disease of the patients from the risk group. The progress of Covid-19 is different for all patients: some of them recover on 7-10th day, and some develop an oxygen dependence.
“That is why all doctors need some prediction criteria. I am pleased to report and the Ukrainian doctors will get to know about it faster: we supposed that it is the level of the cell-free DNA that is the prediction criteria (the higher it is, the worse is the prediction) and proved it first in the world,” he said.
Dosenko said that during the hospitalization of patients with different progress of the disease, the blood samples were taken to define the level of the cell-free DNA. They received the final results recently.
“All people need to do to predict at the beginning the progress of the disease and, correspondingly, what drugs should be taken – to give a blood sample for detection of the level of cell-free DNA,” Dosenko noted.
Earlier, Prime Minister Denys Shmygal claimed that the third wave of coronavirus pandemic has begun in Ukraine.
Besides, he underlined that if most of the Ukrainian regions end up in the red quarantine zone, there could be another lockdown in this country.
As of March 4, Ukrainian doctors detected 1,374,762 cases of infection with Covid-19 in this country. 1,186,873 people recovered, and 26,591 died of complications caused by the disease. Over the last 24 hours, 10,057 new cases were reported, and 194 patients died. Currently, three Ukrainian regions are in the red quarantine zone.
