The Cabinet of Ministers appointed Taras Kremin as the new Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language. Svitlana Bronnikova and Svyatoslav Litynsky also claimed the office. The corresponding decision was made on July 8, said Vasyl Mokan, the representative of the Cabinet in the Verkhovna Rada.
"Today, by a rating vote, government appointed Taras Kremin to the post of the authorized representative for the protection of the state language," Mokan stated.
Taras Kremin was a candidate from the Commissioner for Human Rights. From 2014 to 2019, he was an MP from the National Front Party. He is a professor at the Mykolaiv National Agrarian University and the Mykolaiv Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education.
Earlier the position of language ombudsman in Ukraine was held by Tetyana Monakhova. She was appointed to the post in November 2019, but at the end of April, she announced her resignation.
The main tasks of the language ombudsman are to protect the Ukrainian language as a state language; protection of the right of citizens of Ukraine to receive information and services in the fields of public life in the state language, as well as the removal of obstacles and restrictions on the use of the state language.
