Ukrainian swimmer wins first gold medal for Ukraine at 2020 Paralympics

Ukrainian swimmer Yelyzaveta Mereshko has won a gold medal at women’s 50m freestyle within 2020 Tokyo Paralympics as Suspilne reported.

Mereshko has started the competitions in Tokyo as the current Olympic competitor. The Ukrainian won four gold medals, including women’s 50m freestyle, at Rio 2016.

In the final round, Mereshko performed with two Ukrainians – Anna Hontar and Viktoriia Savitsova. Hontar won bronze for Ukraine.

As of now, Ukraine takes 5th place in the medal count with five medals:  one gold, two silver, and two bronze awards.

As we reported, Ukrainian fencer Yevheniia Breus has won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

The 2020 Paralympic Games have started in Tokyo on August 24. The games will last from August 24 until September 5, 2021. About 4,400 athletes from 160 countries participate in the Paralympic Games.

About a hundred athletes come to Tokyo Paralympics from Ukraine. They participate in different competitions, particularly, archery, paracanoe, shooting, table tennis, and others. The biggest team in the Ukrainian Paralympic team is swimmers – 40 athletes.
