Surgeons of Kyiv Institute of Neurosurgery (named after Romodanov) held a unique operation to excise brain tumour. The doctors combined three technologies that allowed excising the tumour, reports TSN.
The surgeons started from creating a computer model of the tumour to see which parts of the brain it touches. Such model is like a navigation map for the computer system and for a doctor. It allows detecting the tumour with accuracy of up to half a millimeter. But to cut it off, they chose a method nobody used before.
This one operation combines three technologies at the same time: endoscopy – to reach most dangerous areas, computer navigation and a laser to excise the tumour.
“This is the only way to both excise the tumour and to preserve the quality life for the patient,” the surgeon Volodymyr Rozumenko said.
No one in the world combined these technologies before. The result surpassed all expectations. There was almost no blood during the operation. Thanks to that, the patient from the surgery room was transferred to his bed ward. Only a small scar on the head reminds of yesterday’s operation.
On the next day, according to doctors, the patient was not taken to the intensive care box, but immediately to his ward. Earlier, the patient had headache and difficulty in limb movement. Doctors examined and found a large tumor. Worst of all, the surgeon says, is that the tumor pressed the nerve endings. He could be paralyzed at any moment. Actually, this was the main difficulty of the operation.
As it was reported earlier 38 military doctors perished during ATO, according to Poroshenko. Over 200 medics were wounded.
