Ukrainian polar scientists depart to Antarctica on expedition

Participants of 22nd expedition will be researching ozone holes

Ukrainian and British polar explorers are the only ones who research ozone holes over the last 20 years, according to Ukrinform.

Members of the expedition were selected out of 40 candidates who were nominated by scientific institutions. They have undergone solid training, medical and psychological tests. Good health was the most important criterion.

This is the 22nd Ukrainian Antarctic expedition. Its budget amounted to more than $1.4 million.

There are 12 scientists in the team. They will be living and conduct scientific research at Vernadsky Research Base for the whole year. Medical-biological, physical and hydrometeorological researches are included in the program. There will also be excursions for tourists who are usually coming to the station from November till March, that is up to 6 thousand people in total.

Ukrainian scientists took embroidered map of Ukraine and traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts with them to the ice continent.

Ukrainian and British polar explorers are the only ones who research ozone holes over the last 20 years. Average annual temperature is minus 57 degrees Celsius.
