Ukrainian MPs lift parliamentary immunity

Lawmakers stripped themselves of the immunity, which makes it easier to bring them to justice in case of any law infringements

Ukrainian lawmakers voted for the law that lifted parliamentary immunity from members of the Parliament - that is, themselves. 363 MPs voted for the document.

The law makes it easier to detain and bring any MP to justice, in case this person breaks the law.

On August 29, members of the newly shaped Ukrainian Parliament gathered for the opening session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. On the very first work day, they dismissed the previous government, shaped the new Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk, relieved Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko of his office and appointed his successor Ruslan Ryaboshapka.

The session began on Thursday morning; as of 0.30 a.m. August 30, it is still underway. Certain topics are still being considered.
