Sergei Loznitsa, Ukrainian film director, won the Best Director Award for Donbass film

Sergei Loznitsa, Ukrainian film director, who presented Donbass film at the Cannes Festival within the Un Certain Regard section, got the Best Director Awards, as Arthouse Traffic reports.

Benicio del Toro headed the jury of the Un Certain Regard. Sweden film Border, directed by Ali Abbasi, won the prize.

The world premiere of Donbass took place within the Cannes festival on May 9. The film was created with the cooperation with Germany, Ukraine, the Netherlands, France and Romania. The film shooting was held in winter in Kryvyi Rih.

Sergei Loznitsa is one of the most prominent Ukrainian film directors in the world. His movie My Joy became the first Ukrainian film presented at the official Cannes Festival competition in 2010. Besides, other two Loznitsa’s films were presented within the festival’s program – Maidan in 2014 and A Gentle Creature in 2017.

Donbass will be screened in Ukraine this year.

Earlier, another Ukrainian movie included in the official program of the festival Woman at War got the prize for best music.
