An agent of the Russian military intelligence was detained when he was crossing the state border. He was heading to Voronezh for a meeting with his curator. This was reported by the press-service of the Security Service of Ukraine.
"The counterintelligence agents and Chief Investigative Department of the Security Service of Ukraine detained an agent of Russian military intelligence who was heading to Voronezh for a meeting with his curator," the statement reads.
It is reported that Zaporizhia resident, an employee of the enterprise of State concern Ukroboronprom was recruited by the General Directorate of the General Staff of Russian Armed Forces in 2014 on annexed territory of Crimea. He was motivated with money and his support of an idea of “Russian world.”
It is noted that the offender was paid to collect information about functioning of Ukrainian defense industry enterprises and the social and political situation in Zaporizhia region for Russian intelligence. He sent collected data through electronic communications to Russian officer, and during personal meetings on the territory of Russian Federation, Belarus and temporarily annexed Crimea.
Law enforcers arrested the agent when he was crossing the state border with intelligence materials and seized the hidden micro SD, which contained intelligence information collected for the transfer to the Russian side.
Computer equipment and media used for the processing, storage and transmission of intelligence data, as well as means of communication with a Russian side were found during searches at offender’s place of residence.
The Russian agent was charged with papers on suspicion of treason, and he was chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention for a term of 60 days.
