The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained former MP Oleksandr Shepelev on the suspicion of attempted murder and a number of other crimes, including embezzlement, as press secretary of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Larysa Sarhan told 112.ua.
Shepelev was detained near Kyiv on February 8. Today, the Pechersk district court is to choose the preventive measure for him.
In 2012, former MP from Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (dissolved in 2012) Shepelev was accused of embezzling funds of Rodovid Bank in the sum of over $8 million, as well as participating in the embezzlement of $11,6 million allocated for re-financing the National Bank in March-May 2009. Moreover, he is suspected of an attempted murder of former shareholder of Rodovid Bank Serhiy Didchenko.
He was detained in Hungary in July 2013, and then extradited to Ukraine. On June 6, 2014, he ran away from the hospital where he was detained and treated after extradition. Interpol started looking for him in September 2014. In less than a year, he was detained not far from Moscow and detained by a Moscow court.
In April 2015, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine addressed their Russian counterparts inquiring to extradite the former official. However, in August 2016, the Russian Prosecution officially refused to extradite Shepelev and released him.
