Ukraine’s parliament nominates Sentsov for Nobel Peace Prize

The Verkhovna Rada adopted the draft resolution appealing to the Norwegian Nobel Committee to nominate Oleg Sentsov for the Nobel Peace Prize. 245 people's deputies voted for the decision during the session on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.

The deputies approved the text of the address to the Norwegian Nobel Committee on this matter.

“The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine nominates Oleg Sentsov, who has been illegally detained in the Russian Federation for 4 years, for the Nobel Peace Prize: for his courageous behavior; for displaying a heroic non-violent protest against the illegal occupation by the Russian Federation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions; for defending human rights; for readiness to sacrifice his life for the sake of others' freedom,” the parliament’s statement said.

As it was reported earlier, a draft law offering to nominate Ukrainian movie maker and political prisoner Oleg Sentsov for Nobel Peace Prize was registered in Ukrainian Parliament on September 5. Refat Chubarov, the Chairman of the Crimean Tatars’ Mejlis, and Artur Gerasimov, Member of Parliament of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko Block, are the authors of the bill.
