"Ukraine will have to explain the staging of the murder of a Russian journalist," Didier Reynders said.
Belgian Foreign Ministry added that one cannot fight fake news with other fake news.
Arkadiy Babchenko, reported murdered yesterday in Kyiv, is alive. As a result of the special operation conducted by Ukrainian law enforcers, the killer who received the order to murder Arkadiy Babchenko and the organizer of the murder were detained. Only a very limited circle of people knew that the murder of Arkadiy Babchenko was staged.
Arkadiy Babchenko is the Russian journalist, war-time correspondent and the writer. He served with the Russian regular army, surviving the combat action in both Chechen wars (the 1990s and 2000). Later, he prepared a number of reports during the armed conflict in South Ossetia in 2008. Since 2012, the Russian government has been prosecuting him for critical reports against the incumbent authority.
In 2017, he and his family left Russia due to constant threats. Since August 2017, he has lived in Kyiv, working as a TV host.
Russia reacted to the staged murder of Babchenko: the Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal investigation, Russia’s Foreign Ministry demanded that Ukraine conducts an on-the-spot investigation of the journalist’s murder.
